FEBRUARY IS DENTAL MONTH!!

Did you know….

*      According to American Veterinary Dental Society, more then 80% of dogs develop a form of canine gum disease by 3 years of age!

o       Symptoms include: yellowish or brown build-up of tartar along the gum line, red inflamed gums (aka-gingivitis), persistent bad breath, and loose teeth. Etc.

o       Dogs are not the only ones susceptible to dental issues, cats are as well!

§         Dogs have 42 permanent teeth

§         Cats have 30 permanent teeth

*      Small dogs are more likely to develop periodontal disease than large breeds.

o       This is due to the fact that small breeds’ teeth are often too large for their little mouths!

*      Plaque: food particles and bacteria collecting along the gum line-routine home care can help take care of this

o       Chew toys, bones, daily brushing with Pet Toothpaste

§         (do not use our toothpaste on your pets teeth, it can upset their stomachs)

*      Tartar: Minerals in the saliva combine with plaque and form tartar (calculus)

*      Periodontal Disease: This process once started is irreversible. Tartar begins to build up below your pets gum line and forms pockets or gaps between the gum and teeth causing bacteria to grow.

o       Bacteria can potentially enter the bloodstream, affecting your pets’ heart valves, liver and kidney!

o       Also…can lead to loose teeth, abscesses, bone loss, and infection

How we can help…

*      KEEP IN MIND: Throughout the month of November our dentals are greatly discounted!!!

*      We work with dogs, cats, and other small animals, providing excellent dental care

o       All patients are given an initial evaluation- and we strongly encourage at that time to do pre-anesthetic blood for both your pets’ health, and safety!

*      All teeth cleanings include but not limited to: catheter to give fluids intravenously during the procedure, ultrasonic cleaning to help chip away the tartar that may have built up or is beginning to build up, constant monitoring of the heart rate and oxygen levels, extractions only if necessary (rest assured we will never pull teeth unless they NEED to be pulled), post-op care, as well as antibiotics to go home!

o       We offer Dental Kits for purchase, to brush your pets teeth at home

Ask a receptionist to schedule you a dental as well as your pets’ consultation today!
